What project you ask?
Well, here in ClaudeStreet we have difficulty in hearing the phone when it rings downstairs. So, using the wonders of technology we came up with a plan. We can put a modem on one of the servers, and that can listen to it and send us a message upstairs when the phone rings. Easy....
Problem 1: Modem lead not long enough...
Solution 1: Relocate phone point in Ant's room to be next to the server. Also means we can relocate the ADSL modem.
Problem 2: Run out of ISA slots in box.
Solution 2: Use a PCI NIC, thus relieving a much needed slot for and ancient modem.
Problem 3: Sodding winmodems and Linux - nuff said.
Solution 3: Try different assortments of modems in box.
Problem 4: Make it talk to the computers upstairs.
Solution 4: Settle for making an IRC Client, that sends messages to us when the phone rings. And a winpopup box to Russ, 'cause he doesn't want to install Trillian.
Ah well! It works now. Also added a log thing to the index page of the website, so now you can find out when we were last called!

I predict a flood of people ringing you just so they can see the website update.
Wot, no caller ID?

Posted by: Joe on December 9, 2002 05:57 PMDont be silly, that wouldnt involve the wonders of technology....... well it would, but not quite as sad/cool......... you decide which it is....
